HISTORY

Taking care of Aspen since 1891

The Aspen Elks Lodge #224, established in 1891, has a rich history. Initiated by the DDGER of Denver Lodge #17, it elected Charles R. Bell as its first Exalted Ruler. The Lodge moved from Durant Street to Armory Hall on Galena Street in 1892, and finally to Hyman Avenue in 1904.

Significant events include the shipment of 25 elk to Aspen in 1913, the first Turkey Roll in 1918, and the formation of the Colorado Elks Association in 1903. A Community Welfare Committee was established in 1921.

The Lodge’s benevolent endeavors have grown significantly, with its scholarship program increasing from $1,000 in 1974 to $79,000 in 2004. The Aspen Elks continue their tradition of patriotism and community involvement, with activities such as senior citizen luncheons, youth program sponsorships, and community program involvement. Today, the Lodge’s community involvement is greater than ever.
